5 Simple Posing Tips to Feel More Confident in Front of the Camera
Let’s be honest, most people feel a little awkward when they’re having their photo taken. You’re not alone.
The good news? You don’t have to be a model to look natural and confident in your portraits. A few small adjustments in posture and mindset go a long way. Whether you’re coming in for a solo session, senior portraits, or professional headshots, these tips will help you show up feeling more at ease and look it too.
1. Relax your hands
Your hands can give away tension fast. Instead of clenching or letting them hang stiffly, try gently placing them in your pockets, loosely crossing your arms, or resting them on your hips or thighs. Think intentional but relaxed.
Bonus: If you’re not sure what to do with your hands, I’ll guide you into something that looks and feels natural.
2. Drop your shoulders
Most people instinctively raise their shoulders when they’re nervous, which creates a tight look and messes with posture. Take a slow breath, let your shoulders drop, and stand tall. You’ll instantly look more confident.
3. Shift your weight slightly
You don’t need to stand perfectly straight like you’re taking a passport photo. Try putting your weight on one foot, softening your knees, and letting your body angle slightly. It adds shape and movement, and it feels more like how you actually stand when you’re comfortable.
4. Think about something (not nothing)
Blank expressions can happen when you overthink “looking natural.” Instead, think of a person, moment, or feeling that makes you smile or even laugh. I might ask you a question during the shoot just to help bring out the kind of expression that feels like you.
5. Trust the process
My job is to guide you. You don’t need to know how to pose or where to look; I’ll help you find good light, comfortable angles, and expressions that feel authentic. All you need to do is show up open and ready to relax into it.
